What We Take & What We Won't Take

The Short Version

If it is not hazardous and a two-person crew can carry it, we can almost certainly take it. The vast majority of what fills Shoals garages, attics, sheds and rental turnovers is standard junk-removal fare. The short list of things we cannot haul comes down to a few categories that state and federal rules route to specialized handlers - and even then, we can usually point you to the right place.

What We Take

Furniture

• Sofas, sectionals, loveseats, recliners and sleeper sofas
• Mattresses and box springs of every size
• Dressers, nightstands, headboards and bed frames
• Dining sets, coffee tables, bookshelves and entertainment centers
• Office desks, filing cabinets and chairs

Appliances

• Refrigerators, freezers and mini-fridges (we handle refrigerant-bearing units correctly)
• Washers, dryers, dishwashers and ranges
• Water heaters, microwaves and small kitchen appliances

Electronics

• TVs of every type, including old CRT tube sets
• Computers, monitors, printers and networking gear
• Stereo equipment and small electronics

Household & Outdoor

• Whole-house, estate and garage clean-outs
• Hot tubs and above-ground spas (we cut and dismantle in place)
• Grills, patio furniture, lawn equipment and swing sets
• Bagged household junk, boxes, clothing and general clutter
• Construction and remodeling debris such as cabinets, drywall, flooring and fixtures
• Yard debris, fencing and dismantled sheds

What We Can't Take

A few materials are regulated as hazardous or require specialized disposal. For your safety and to stay within Alabama and federal rules, we do not haul the following - but we will gladly tell you where they go:

• Wet paint, stains, solvents and other household hazardous waste. Dried-out latex paint (lid off, hardened with kitty litter) can sometimes go in regular trash; liquids cannot.
• Motor oil, antifreeze, fuels and propane tanks. Many auto-parts stores take used oil; propane exchanges take tanks.
• Chemicals, pesticides and pool acid. These belong at a household-hazardous-waste collection, not the landfill.
• Asbestos and materials containing it. Removal is strictly regulated by ADEM and requires a licensed abatement contractor.
• Medical and biohazard waste, including sharps.
• Ammunition and explosives. Contact local law enforcement.

Items We Take, But Handle Specially

Some items are not hazardous but do have their own rules or fees. We still take these; they simply route to a specific destination:

• Tires. Alabama regulates scrap tires and applies a per-tire environmental fee, so tires are kept out of general landfill loads.
• Refrigerators, freezers and window AC units. Federal law requires certified recovery of refrigerant before these are scrapped.
• TVs and electronics. These are directed to e-waste recycling rather than the landfill wherever possible.

How the Removal Actually Works

Booking is simple. You send a couple of photos or describe the pile over the phone, we give you a flat, up-front price, and we schedule a window that works for you. On pickup day, the crew shows up, confirms the items and the price, and does all the lifting - out of the bedroom, up from the basement, down from the attic, or off the back patio. You point; we carry. When the truck is loaded, we sweep the area and haul the load to the right destination, whether that is a donation center, a recycler, or the landfill. You never touch a dolly.

Common Shoals Jobs We Handle

To give you a feel for the range, here are the kinds of jobs we do around the Shoals every week:

• Single-item pickups - a dead washer in a Muscle Shoals garage, one sofa from a Florence apartment, a single mattress after an upgrade.
• Garage and shed cleanouts - years of accumulated tools, boxes, broken furniture and yard equipment cleared in one visit.
• Whole-house and estate cleanouts - emptying an entire home for a sale, a move, or after a loss.
• Rental turnovers - landlords clearing what a departing tenant left behind so the unit can be re-let.
• Remodel debris - old cabinets, countertops, flooring and fixtures pulled during a kitchen or bath project.
• Downsizing and decluttering - helping empty-nesters and seniors lighten a lifetime of belongings at a comfortable pace.

If your situation is not on this list, it almost certainly still fits. When in doubt, a quick call settles it fast.

Why We Sort Instead of Just Dumping

Not everything that leaves your home needs to go to the landfill, and we do not treat it that way. Before a load is tipped, we pull out the pieces that still have life in them - sturdy furniture, working appliances, usable building materials - and route them to local donation partners like the Shoals Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Salvation Army and Goodwill. Recyclable metal, cardboard and electronics are directed to the right recyclers rather than buried. It costs us a little extra effort, but it keeps usable goods in the community and reduces what actually ends up in the ground. When you hand us a mixed load, you can assume the donatable and recyclable share is handled thoughtfully.

Safety Is Part of the Job

The reason we draw a firm line at hazardous materials is not red tape - it is safety and law. Solvents, fuels, pool chemicals and asbestos-containing materials pose real risks to our crew, to sanitation workers down the line, and to the environment, and Alabama and federal rules keep them out of ordinary trash for good reason. Rather than take a shortcut, we would rather point you to the correct household-hazardous-waste channel so it is handled properly. For everything else - the vast, everyday universe of household junk - we are glad to do the heavy lifting.
